Ayodeji
Balogun aka Wizkid has been in the news a lot lately…for the wrong
reasons. One person who feels that something needs to be done about
Wizkid’s situation is music critic Bisoye Gold. He sent in this article.
Enjoy and come to your own conclusions.
First of all, let me
state that I am a big fan of Wizkid. In fact, if anyone asks me who my
three favourite musicians are, Wizkid will definitely be in that list.
But, if you doubt the headline of this article, then consider what
happened when Wizkid expressed his desire to work with songstress Asa on
Twitter recently. The reactions of some Nigerians about the
whole matter is something else. To say it was shocking is an
understatement. @JazzObenewaa said “No, not her. Don’t go and spoil her career”. My personal favourite was from @Cuhotgist, who said: “Amala and salad don’t mix”. Lol.
Has it gotten to the point where fans now think Asa and Wizkid making music together would be considered by some a mistake on Asa’s part? How Wizzy got to this point must be a question many are struggling to answer.
Ojuelegba crooner has gotten to a point in his career where he doesn’t just give a damn anymore – which is not supposed to be. He should have read the handwriting on the wall when fans started reacting negatively to the delay of his sophomore album Ayo. When the album was finally released, they were disappointed and they did not keep quiet about it. Some even went as far as saying the only thing good about the album was its artwork.
Personally, I think Wizkid is to blame. Though most might say his antics are all part of an ongoing publicity stunt, it is obvious that the
Then came his feud with Davido in July 2014. He came out of that feud a loser. Davido, indeed, had a better 2014 than he (Wizkid) did. Look at all the awards Davido was nominated for, consider the fact that he also won almost every one of them – and he achieved all these by releasing maybe three 0r four singles. But Wizzy released a full album in 2014 and, yet, still missed out on the awards circuit.
In October 2014, it was the turn of his former producer, Samklef. They went at each other online, calling each other names, making accusations and counter accusations. While we were still trying to process the Samklef vs Wizkid feud, Saeon came at Wizkid, accusing him of not supporting the song on which she featured him. Expectedly, Wizkid responded in a series of tweets and TV interviews, saying, among other things, that he doesn’t “even know Saeon” and that they are “not friends”.
Now, in February 2015,in the words of Dayo Showemimo of NET, Wizkid and his ex-label mate, Skales are currently having a go at it online, with some serious words flying both ways. The result: both young men have given cause for not-so-nice stories to spring up about them on line.
An industry insider also revealed to me personally that the number of shows Wizkid gets invited to perform has reduced. Now, I do not know how true this is, but if there is any truth to this, Wizkid needs to do something fast before the endorsements stop rolling in.
Again, though, one needs to consider that Wizkid’s new ‘aggressive’ persona may be part of a PR campaign. Perhaps, he is trying to change his image. Despite that, one thing remains clear: Wizkid needs to focus on his music and win back the goodwill he [seemingly] has lost.
